Eco-friendly hotels in London

Guest post by Susan.

Lots of travellers are keen to reduce the environmental impact of their trip. One way to do this is by choosing to stay in an eco-friendly hotel. Many London hotels now try to limit water and electricity wastage, but some have taken even greater steps towards going green. Here is a guide to some of the city’s most environmentally friendly hotels.

The Cavendish

This 4 star hotel is in Bloomsbury. As well as recycling normal materials like paper and glass, it also recycles furniture, uniforms and IT equipment by donating them to local charities and businesses. It encourages cycling to work and provides complimentary secure bike racks for guests and staff. Local and organic produce is used for cooking where possible. The hotel has energy efficient lifts and heat pump heat recovery dishwashers.

Base2Stay

This is a 4 star hotel in Kensington. It has received a Gold Award for Green Tourism and recycles 80% of its waste. Lights in the bedrooms are key-operated so that they are turned off when the guest is out, and lights in the public areas work on timers and motion sensors. The staff use environmentally friendly cleaning products and guests are provided with Fairtrade tea and coffee.

51 Buckingham Gate

These luxury suites and apartments are located in Westminster. They have a dedicated Green Team which organises ongoing staff training and looks into new initiatives. Nearly a thousand spotlights have been removed from the public areas of the hotel and a water harvesting system has been installed. Paper, glass and so on are recycled and office workers are fined when they leave their lights on.

Apex London Wall -

This is a 4 star hotel in the City of London. Green procedures were in place from the time it was built, when it the property was thermally modelled and subjected to an air tightness test. It was fitted with energy efficient boilers and heat pump technology. The toiletries in the rooms use natural ingredients and are biodegradable. Local produce is served in the restaurant.
